February Dance: Don’t forget the location of our February dance! We will be holding this Mainstream +2 dance at Litchfield’s Griffin Memorial School on Route 3A. For those of you who used to dance with the Litchfield Swingers, that is where they used to hold their dances. Kathi and Harli have come up with another surprise gimmick for this dance, so you won’t want to miss it. The theme is 4 the İ of &127 Dancing, and the caller and cuer will be Ed and Corinne Renauld.

Fairview Demo: Thank you to all who participated in the demonstration dance at the Fairview Nursing Home in Hudson last month. It was a great success, in addition to over two squares of Border City Squares dancers, Patty was also able to cajole a full square of wheel chair dancers to join us for a couple of tips. It was quite a site.

Rumba Lessons: Round dance lessons are proceeding very well. Phil and Sandy have already taught us several complete dances, with more to come. I hope if we offer rounds next fall, many more of our dancers will choose to participate.

March Dance: We will have another out-of-state caller – Randy Page from Connecticut – for our March 13th dance at the Mill-A-Round in Manchester. This is will be our second class dance. Since Randy is going to be in town, we are going to try again to hold a Saturday afternoon Plus dance from 3:30 to 6:00 in addition to the

evening Class dance. The cost of each separate dance will be $6 per person or $10 for those attending both dances.

Advanced Tickets: For those who have not noticed, when you attend our dances, you now have the opportunity to purchase advanced tickets for the next month’s dance at a dollar off. These $5 tickets are only good for the following month’s dance. If you regularly attend our dances, this is our way of saying thank you and encouraging you to keep dancing with us!

WACA Dance, March 6th: We plan to set up a trip to the Worcester Area Coordinators Association dance in Boylston on March 6th. Those who attended this dance last year say they had a great time. There will be two dance halls – one for Class (easy mainstream) and one for Plus and round dancing. Many callers plan to be there including such notables as Matt Auger, Don Bachelder, Lenny Stratton, Mike Petitbon, etc. Dancing will be from 2:00 to 5:30 on Sunday afternoon. Since this event will include class as well as mainstream and plus dancing, we hope everyone will be able to attend. There will be more details on carpools and schedules at or upcoming workshops and dances.

Happy Valentines Day and happy dancing to all.

Class Notes

Congratulations to all class members for a job "well done" hosting the annual Pajama Party class dance on January 8, 2005 and even more importantly, congratulations once again for perfect attendance from our class members, especially on such a night of inclement weather.  Thanks to Marie and Norm for being the gracious host and hostess at the event (even though there were not that many people to greet!) Also attending and helping with preparations were Won, Myong Suk, Irene, and Cassandra.  Unfortunately, no other classes attended the dance, but what we lacked in numbers we made up for in enthusiasm and fun dancing during the evening.

Jim Wass from Maryland was our caller for the evening.  Our own Phil Gatchell was scheduled to cue for this dance but could not make the trip because of the weather.  Jim filled in with a few rounds that he knows how to cue and also introduced a little contra dancing to make things more interesting and get all dancers on the floor.

Many thanks need to be said for making our class Pajama Dance a success, first to Chris for listening to the weather reports all afternoon and finally making the decision to go ahead with the dance (and we are glad that you did), to the class members and Sharon and Scott for attending and hosting the dance, and as always to our dedicated club members who turned out to support the class and bring donations for the food table.

The class displayed its new 2004-2005 flag for courtesy banners at the dance.  Sharon and Scott gave out courtesy banners to two couples, Clay and Dottie and Marie and Norm, who dance with both Border City and Heel and Toe class workshops, and also a courtesy banner to our own Border City class members for hosting and attending the dance.

Upcoming events for Border City class members include the Class Ball Valentine's Dance at Heel and Toe on Sunday, February 13, from 6-8:30 at the Mill-A-Round.  This dance will be called by Heel and Toe's Ralph Peacock, no round dancing.  We hope all our class members will attend this dance.  Then, on Sunday afternoon, March 6, there is the WACA square dance in West Boylston, MA, which is always a lot of fun for both experienced dancers as well as new class members; there are  halls for dancers at all levels with many well known callers and cuers there for us to enjoy.  So class members mark this one on your calendar and let me, Sharon, or Scott know if you would like to attend.  Then, on March 12, the class will be hosting the Border City Squares club dance at the Mill-A-Round with Randy Page calling and no cueing, a night of all square dancing for class members to enjoy, and hopefully, with no snow storms to compete with this time! And then not too long at all after the March dance, we will be preparing our 2004-2005 class for graduation and hopefully their first trip to convention in Vermont.

As always, thanks to all our club angels for your support on Monday night workshops.  Occasional contributions to the food table on Monday nights would also be greatly appreciated.

January 8: Border City Squares held a class dance at the Mill-A-Round in Manchester. The 2004 class hosted the dance and the theme was our Pajama Dance. Jim Wass from the Washington D.C. area was the caller and due to the bad weather, our cuer was not able to make it to the dance.

We had a little over three squares show up for this dance!! That was pretty good considering the terrible winter weather that we had that day. Jim pitched in and did some rounds as well as some contra dancing to help fill up the night with fun dancing. Heel & Toe raided the dance with one square of dancers and our own club had 20+ dancers in attendance, including all of our current class members. Those who chose to brave the weather were treated to a unique and fun evening of dancing.

For those who were wondering about the special Plus level dance we had planned for the afternoon of January 8th, we had to cancel the dance due to the inclement weather. It was decided by the board that the weather was still too nasty in the afternoon to expect dancers to come out, but that the snow was expected to clear up in time for the evening dance.

Our next club dance will be on February 12th, and will be hosted by Kathi Butt and Harli Webb. It is a Mainstream dance with two Plus tips. The caller will be Ed Renauld and Ed’s wife, Corinne, will provide cueing. The theme will be "4 the İ of &127 Dancing". Kathi and Harli always come up with creative themes, so expect the unexpected at this one!! I hope to see a good showing of our club members at this dance and lots of food for our guests as well.

Remember that our dances in February and April will be at the Griffin Memorial School on Route 3A in Litchfield. Our March, May, and June dances will be held at the Mill-A-Round in Manchester.

In February 1974 Border City’s new traveling mascot made its debut at the Snow Ball Dance. Ken and City Knight made this new mascot. It is a large key in the shape of the state of NH. It is still in use today!
