PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Happy October everyone! It is with a sad heart that I share with you the passing of Sonya Fredrickson. (Obituary later in newsletter). She was a wonderful little lady that was filled with spirit and energy, loved dancing and all those she danced with. In her memory we are collecting money to give as a club donation to the Square Dance Foundation. If anyone is interested in donating please give the money to me (Debbie). If you want to write a check for a donation, make it out to Border City Squares.

In the spirit that Sonya was so filled with I encourage you all to come to the Friendship Festival on October 19, 2003 at the Mill-A-Round in Manchester, NH 2-5 PM. As part of this festival is the choosing of a new Friendship Couple to represent the North Shore Square and Round Dance Association. Each club that belongs to the Association is asked to select a couple from their club to represent them. From these couples from all the clubs, one couple’s name is picked from a hat to be this year’s Friendship Couple. It is good if these people LOVE to dance! Becoming the Friendship Couple gives you admission to one dance at every club in the Association for free during your year representing NSSRDA. Please see me if you are interested in representing Border City Squares!

Before we all go to that we will be supporting 40 years of dancing in Acton! Acton’s Square Wheelers are celebrating their 40th Anniversary on Oct 10, 2003. There will be a car pool. I would love to see Border City well represented supporting this club. The caller that started our club will be calling, Jim Mayo, with Sandi Simmons cueing.

Our own Border City Squares dance the following night, October 11, 2003, will be great fun with a caller that used to be from the area, Kevin Bersing, and Corinne Renauld will be cueing! This will be a very fun dance and a great opportunity to dance to someone new for many of us! He was in the area a few weeks ago as well and Steve and I went to the dance and had a really great time! You will be sorry if you miss this dance!

October is a busy month! The Square Dance Foundation of New England will be having their 30th Anniversary! They are celebrating it with a dance on October 25th 10 – 4 at the Mill-A-Round. It will be a day of dancing and socializing. Come for all or a piece of the day and check out the Museum that is housed at the Mill-A-Round! If you are interested in history, and even if you aren’t, it is quite interesting to check out! It is here that I will be giving our club donation in Sonya’s memory.

During our class time on Monday, October 27th we will be having a Halloween Party! It will be a dance from 7 to 10. Please come and meet our class members! Come dressed in costumes if you would like but please come and have some fun, costume or not!

The next board meeting will be October 23, 2003 at 7PM at Chris Howard’s home. As always, the meetings are open to all club members. Please see me prior to the meeting if there is anything you would like to have discussed at the meeting.

Happy Dancing!

Club Chair Report Chris Howard

September 13: In spite of much lower attendance than hoped for, our first dance of the season was lots of fun for those who did attend. Dave Hass did his usual outstanding job of keeping the dancers on their toes with plenty of "all position" calls, and he treated us to his rendition of "drinking wine" which is always fun. Phil Gatchell provided a good variety of round dances, from rumbas and waltzes to two-step and cha-cha. A sincere thank you goes to Vivian and Bill Thompson, Priscilla and Wayne Griffin, and Kathi Butt for helping set up for this dance.

We had 18 members of Border City Squares in attendance, and Harli brought her step daughter, Rhiannon, along to watch. We were able to include her in one of the squares, and perhaps she may come back and dance with us again. Heel and Toe brought 15 dancers for their raid. It is wonderful to have such a supportive club nearby to exchange banners with. In addition we had another 16 dancers from other clubs including Town Travelers, Turkey Town Trotters, Baldwin Apple Squares, Starlight Strollers, and the Wolf Rockers. Bob and Louise Griffin, presidents of EDSARDA, were among those attending.

Our Next dance will be on October 11th, and will be hosted by Dave and Mary Raymond. The theme for this Mainstream (plus two plus tips) dance is Halloween, and the caller and cuer will be Kevin Bersing and Corinne Renauld. Costumes are optional [Editor: clothes are not]. If you can help with setup, please plan to be at the Infant Jesus hall at 12:30 that day.

PLEASE HELP! We still have two dances this season that are without hosts or themes. The November 8th dance is a Plus dance with Matt Auger calling and Barbara Nutting cueing, and the May 8th dance is a Mainstream dance with Suptei Rogers and Phil Gatchell. These should both be great dances, but it sure would be nice if someone besides board members would give us a hand by hosting these dances! It really isn't all that hard, and there are always plenty of people willing to help with setup and cleanup.

Historian Tammy Doris

Have any of you ever visited the Square Dance Foundation of New England (SDFNE) museum and library in Manchester, NH?

The SDFNE, Inc. was founded in 1973 by caller and editor of The New England Square Dance Caller Magazine, Charlie Baldwin and his wife Bertha. It is a non profit organization and its members are individuals, clubs, and organizations who care about our dance heritage of the past, and want to see it continue on as a living legacy.

On October 25th the SDFNE will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary! The celebration will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In the morning there will be time to browse the museum with it's archives of books, art, photos, awards, clothing and MUCH MORE. There will also be activities, an auction, and refreshments. Starting at noon there will be dancing (MS level) by SDFNE callers and cuers. The cost is only $5.

For more information call Anna Dixon 781-944-4416 or Dick Severance 603-623-2692

There is also a wonderful web site at http://www.sdfne.org.

The SDFNE is located in the Historic Waumbec Mill Building at 250 Commercial St. Manchester, NH on the second floor next to the Mil-A-Round Dance Center.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!
