January 12 Our September
2002 Class hosted our January Dance, Pajama Party. They
did a great job decorating the hall with stuffed animals
and blankets. We want to thank all those who helped with
the setup Chris Howard, Debbie Coit, Mary &
Dave Raymond, Sabrina OConnor, Cecilia Kendig,
Paula Finamore, Gene Dorr and Paulina OConnell. We
also thank everyone who brought food and stayed to help
clean up afterwards. This was a class dance with Noah
Nutting calling and Barbara Nutting cueing. They both
came dressed in pajamas. They also brought their son, who
is learning to square dance. We had 5 squares in attendance with 3 dancers from Litchfield Swingers, 4 dancers from Red Hot Rovers, 4 dancers from Riverside Squares, 1 dancer from Great Plain Squares, as well as 28 Border City Dancers. It was great to see that we had several young new dancers. Our next dance is Saturday, February 8 and will be a Mainstream with 2 Plus tips Dance. The caller is Randy Page and Marilyn Rivenburg will be cueing. The theme for this dance is 50s Party and will be hosted by Steve & Lorri Wurtzler. DONT FORGET TO WEAR YOUR 50s OUTFITS. Setup time will be 12:30 pm Saturday for anyone who would like to help. ALSO, WE NEED MORE MEN TO HELP WITH SETUP. Last month we had only ladies. There are tables and carts of chairs that need setting up and the help of the gentlemen in the club is greatly appreciated. We appreciate all the help from those who take time from their Saturday to come and help. The more volunteers the quicker we set up. 2002-2003 BCS Dances

Border City
Square Dance Club through the Ages
Tammy Doris
Border City Square Dance Club of Nashua, New Hampshire was founded in 1958. Jim Mayo became interested in starting a square dance club in Nashua after seeing the founding of the Allemande 8s Club in Manchester, New Hampshire. The first organizational meeting was held in March 1958. Shortly after that the name Border City Squares was adopted. In September 1958, the first class lessons were held with Jim | |
Mayo as the caller. The lessons at
this time were only for ten weeks and consisted of twelve
lessons. The first class of six couples graduated in
January 1959. The clubs membership grew and through
the 1960s nearly everyone who came to take lessons
stayed to complete the course. In September 1968, the
official emblem for the Border City Squares was adopted. Ed Ross Smith became the club caller in 1961, and Mal "Yikes" Cameron soon followed him. As the club grew it also expanded to include round dancing. In March/April of 1967 the Smoothies Round Dance Club was sponsored. Also in this year round dancing was included at club dances. In time the club expanded to include the younger generation. In 1974, Border City Squares sponsored a new teen club, The Fun Luvin Teens |
|
The club continued to grow during the 1970s. In April 1976, the club dress of blue and white gingham was adopted. On May 13, 1978, the club celebrated its Twentieth Anniversary! In the 1980s the club changed with the times and more actively encouraged singles to join. In June 1980, Eddie Mayall, the club caller, celebrated calling for the Border City Squares for fifteen years. In 1982 the club dress was redesigned with a more modern look but still retained the blue and white colors. On May 14, 1983, the club celebrated its Thirtieth Anniversary! In 1991 Ray Aubut became the club caller, and remained with the club until 1995 when Ed Renauld became the club caller. Eds wife Corinne became the club cuer, and round dance lessons became a regular part of the Monday night lessons. Also at this time, since none of the teen clubs that were founded when dancing was more popular were still active, the Border City bylaws were revised to encourage teens to rejoin the club, and an effort was made to bring families into the club. In the fall of 2000 the club also began experimenting with a multi-cycle lesson program with lessons starting in September and again in January 2001. Border City Squares in spite of many changes in the dance program and in the membership holds true to its original values of friendship and fun. Now Border City Square Dance club will be celebrating its 45th Anniversary on May 10, 2003! Come join us as we "Walk Down Memory Lane." |
