PRESIDENT'S CORNER

We’re off to a great start with this year’s class!! Let’s keep the momentum going!

September’s Demonstration

A big thank you to Ed and the great Border City Squares gang that came to help out at the Resurrection Parish’s demo!! We had two tips for new comers, the second of which we had a 5 year old and a 6 year old dancing with us!!

45th Anniversary Dance

We are looking for some volunteers to help out with this year’s 45th Anniversary Dance that will be held in May. Viv & Bill Thompson & Mary & Dave Raymond are hosting the dance. They are in the planning stages of how to decorate the halls (there will be two halls for this dance) and possibilities of a dinner before the dance. Please speak to one of them if you are interested in helping out. Tammy Dorris will have all the scrapbooks that she’s been working so hard on and keeping up todate at the dance as well!

Halloween Dance

On October 28 there will be a Halloween dance for everyone! Costumes are wonderful, let’s see how creative

we all can be! Costume or not, please come and have a great time dancing with your new friends. The dance will be the entire evening from 7 to 10. For this Monday night we are asking for everyone to bring finger foods, no utensils needed. During the evening there will be a costume parade with prizes!

Board Meeting

The next board meeting will be Sunday, October 20 at 7pm at Harli Thoene’s home. As always they are open to club members. So come up to Manchester for the Friendship Dance, go out to dinner with us and come to the meeting! Please see me prior to the meeting if you have something you’d like to discuss at the meeting.

Club Votes…

I am happy to report that the by-law change was voted on and approved by the club membership that attended the September 23 meeting!  Also approved at that meeting was that addition of Patty Greene as a club caller!!  She will be starting her calling with us on Monday nights in January with the January class.  Thank you to all that participated in these votes!

Happy Dancing

September 14 - We want to thank Wayne & Priscilla Griffin for hosting the first dance of the Border City Squares season. The theme was a Tribute to Heroes and they did a great job on the decorations. This was a mainstream dance with two plus tips with Ted Lizotte calling and Doris T-Bow cueing.

We had 8+ squares in attendance with 20 dancers from Tech Squares and 11 dancers from Pine Tree Riots raiding. There were also dancers from Red Hot Rovers and Single Squares and the Presidents of EDSARDA in attendance, as well as 20 Border City Dancers.

Friendship Festival Amy Bollenbach

NSSARDA holds a Friendship Festival each year in October. In the past it was held in Topsfield MA but this year it is at the Mill-A-Round in Manchester on Sunday, October 20 from 2 to 5 PM. There will be two halls for the dance. In one hall there will be a Mainstream/Plus dance with Shawn Cuddy calling and Bernie Porter cueing. The second hall will be for A-1 dancing with John Hendron calling and Phil Gatchell cueing. Please bring finger foods for the food table. The tickets are $6 at the door and $5 in advance.

All NSSARDA clubs are asked to select two people to be the "Friendship Couple". It is hoped that the club members will attend the dance to support NSSARDA and their club’s "Friendship Couple." The names of the couples go into a hat and one is chosen to be the NSSARDA Friendship Couple. The couple needs to be present at the dance for their names to go into the hat. The prize is one FREE admission to each of the NSSARDA clubs’ activities (usually dances but can be a workshop night). The couple is supposed to visit ALL 24 of the NSSARDA clubs (11 MA, 9 NH, and 4 ME).

If any two people would like to volunteer as a couple to represent BCS and possibly be selected as the NSSARDA "Friendship Couple", please let a board member know by phone or in person at a workshop or our monthly dance. The chosen Border City representative "couple" must attend the Friendship Festival to be eligible for being selected as NSSARDA Friendship Couple for 2002-2003. All BCS volunteer "couples" will have their names placed before the board and one couple will be chosen by the board not later than the workshop on October 14th.

Dancing through Tammi Dorris
the Ages

I was cruising thru some odd dance books and found the funniest thing! Amazing but true - laws about dancing Local statutes often include laws that have remained on the books long after their relevance has passed. In other cases a certain humor seems to have been present from the start. Just consider these examples:
  • Palisades, Ohio - It is illegal to make silly or insulting faces at someone who is trying to learn how to square dance.
  • Lugert, Oklahoma - Under no circumstances may a man with hair growing over his upper lip ask a female to dance.
  • Russelville, Pennsylania - Tickling a girl under her chin with a feather duster to get her attention at a square dance is punishable by law.
  • Rock Springs, Wyoming - No woman may chew tobacco while square dancing unless she has the written permission of her husband.
  • Cotton Valley, Louisiana - No man is allowed to use handbills to advertise for a spouse at a local square dance.
