44th NESRDC

The 44th New England Square and Round Dance Convention is almost upon us, and we are beginning to arrange carpools for those who don’t wish to (or can’t) stay at a hotel near Sturbridge. We are looking for both drivers and riders who wish to participate. Separate lists are being prepared for both Friday, April 26th, and Saturday, April 27th. A sign up sheet for drivers and riders will be at all our club activities for the next few weeks. Please sign up by April 15th so we can arrange groups of riders to match the drivers and their preferred schedules and vehicle capacities.

If you cannot come to one of our activities but would like to carpool to the convention, please call me or email me at howard@hhbrown.com. Those wishing to participate in either the trail-in dance on Thursday evening or in the trail-out dance on Sunday should make their own arrangements.

The drive is around 95 miles each way, and we are suggesting a contribution of $5 to $10 per person per day to the drivers.

St. Patrick’s Dance

The St. Patrick’s dance on March 18th was a treat for all who attended. Unpredictable weather kept attendance down to about 5 ½ squares, but the dancing, decorations, and food were as good as ever. Thanks to those who arrived early to help with the setup and to all who brought food. And special thanks to Corinne for cueing rounds between each square dance tip.

Cycle 1 Class Completion

The completion celebration for our Cycle 1 square dance class will be held on April 22nd at the Horse Pond Fish and Game Club from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Please plan to be with us to welcome our newest mainstream dancers. We will be having lots of finger foods, plenty of dancing, and much fun and fellowship. As usual the new mainstream dancers will attend free of charge, and current members will be asked for a donation of $5 for the evening’s activities.

Round Dance Lessons

After our Cycle 1 class is completed at the end of April, Corinne Renauld will be starting basic Cha round dance lessons at our Monday night workshops. No prior round dance experience is required! You do NOT have to have completed Phase II waltz or two-step to start these lessons. Lessons will start on May 6th and will continue through July 29th. The schedule for our Monday night classes will be continuation of the Cycle II square dance lessons from 7:00 to 9:00 followed by round dance lessons from 9:00 until 10:00. Square dance lessons will be $4 per person, and the round dance lessons will be $3 per person.

Annual Meeting

The BCS annual meeting will be held on Monday April 29 at the Horse Pond Fish and Game Club from 8:30 to 10:00 (following the Cycle 2 square dance class). The primary business will be to elect officers for the coming year. So far we have four volunteers signed up as nominees for next year’s board, but we still need at least four more members to complete the board. This is a great club, but it cannot run without your support. Most of us who have served on the board year after are stepping down. Please consider how much fun you have had with the club, and look over the board duties in the by laws and on the poster displayed at our activities. Then sign up! We really need your help.

Former member of the Club, Gerry Farmer, passed away last month. He and his wife, Pat, were members of the club from 1996 through 2000. Our sympathy goes out to Pat and her family. Gerry will be greatly missed.

NSSARDA Meeting

The two principal topics at the North Shore Square and Round Dance Association meeting on March 17th were new banner raid/retrieval guidelines and a marketing study commissioned by Callerlab on the public’s image of square dancing.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

The new banner guidelines include:
  • There will be no limit on the number of banners a club may give out provided they can make arrangements to retrieve their banners within a year of their being given out.
  • Suggested minimum of 8 people to constitute a banner raid or retrieval.
  • NSSARDA officers may choose to sign in with any single NSSARDA member club if that club needs help making up its 8 dancers.
  • No dancer may sign in with more than one club at a single dance.
  • Clubs may agree on other arrangements for banner exchanges outside these guidelines provided such arrangements are made prior to the dance in question.

Most dancers know that the public’s image of square dancing is often quite different from what we actually experience. Jim Mayo, president of Callerlab, presented a video showing "focus groups" discussing their perceptions of square dancing. It was no great surprise to find that many still think of square dancing as being an activity for old people and one requiring out-of-date frilly dresses, western shirts, and big belt buckles. Also, many still associate our activity with "rustic" barn dances, hoe downs, and twangy country music.

There was, however, one conclusion that many of us tend to overlook, although it is fairly obvious after the fact. All organizations today are having trouble gaining new members since so many people are unwilling to make long-term commitments. More than ever, people value their freedom to make spur-of-the-moment choices from the wide variety of activities available in our society. The idea of being required to attend regular classes for 20 weeks or so before even being able to fully participate in an activity is definitely unattractive to many people. Some people conclude from this study that we will have to fundamentally change the structure of our introductory programs to attract new dancers. Whatever conclusions you draw from this study, we at Border City are always looking for ideas on how we can encourage new dancers to try our activity. Please be creative, and feel free to offer your comments and suggestions to the Board.

Class Location

We are continuing to look for a new location for our Monday night classes. Our contract with the Horse Pond Fish and Game Club has been renewed through the end of July, but we have not extended the contract into next fall’s dance season. So far the process of finding a new location has been more than a little discouraging. However, several new ideas were brought up at the last board meeting, and we will keep everyone advised as we get more information. As always, your suggestions as to possible locations will be welcomed. It would be even more useful if you have a good contact within a proposed organization. The most difficult part of finding a good place to dance is often finding a sympathetic representative from the proposed dance location!

Club Dues

As most of you are aware, the membership year in Border City is from July 1st through June 30th. Therefore, dues will be due by the end of June. Membership costs have not been increased this year and are summarize as follows: There is a mandatory $8 for the newsletter per family group and a $6 membership for each member of a family couple. Membership for the first child in a member family is also $6, and a second child may become a member for $3. Additional children may become members for free. Please remember that all prices for all club activities for teen members other than membership are half price. Teen dancers are considered full members of the club except that they may not hold club office if they are under the age of 18.

Next Board Meeting

Please feel free to join us at the monthly board meeting, which will be held on Tuesday evening, April 16th starting at 7:00 at Mary and Dave Raymond’s house. As always, this will be an open meeting.

Presidents: Chris & Norma Howard

Class Chair Report Bill and Anne Parke

Our September dancers continue the busy pace they have set for themselves! They have completed the Mainstream calls, and now they can spend the next month polishing their skills and reviewing any calls they might have missed. April 22 is the Class Completion Celebration (formerly called graduation!) Plan to attend so we can all welcome these new dancers to our club! The ceremony will include fun and interesting activities for all club members. Please bring finger food to share.

Most weekends class members have been traveling to other clubs, participating in club banner retrievals. They hosted our own Border City class dance on March 9, providing all decorations, and contributing to a very successful and enjoyable dance. At our class level St. Patrick’s Day party, members of both classes appeared to have a wonderful time.

Be sure to sign up for carpooling if you need a ride to the 44th New England Square and Round Dance Convention, April 26 & 27, in Sturbridge, MA. (We assume that you are planning to go, and show off your brand new club badges and your GREAT dancing skills and enthusiasm!)

Club Chair Report Skip & Penny Guild

On Saturday March 9, we had 12+ squares at our BCS Class Dance. The 4 Clubs raiding/retrieving banners were Heel and Toe, The Cloudbusters, Wolf Rockers, and Bradford Country Squares. Class members from 8 different clubs collected courtesy banners. Matt Auger called an interesting and challenging dance that was enjoyed by all the dancers, no matter what level they dance. BCS had 23 dancers, 5 of which were class members. The refreshment table had plenty of food. Thank you again to all club members who bring food each month; you help make our dances a success.

Our class, with the support of Anne Parke - Class Chair, hosted the dance. Bill Parke was home recovering from an injury to his leg. We hope he’ll be back dancing with us soon. The hall was decorated with lions and lambs windsocks representing the winds of March (they were all hand made by Cecilia Kendig). Club members who helped set up for the dance were Wayne & Priscilla Griffin, Amy Bollenbach, Cecilia Kendig, Rita Lamache, and Anne & Jesse Reczko. Also for all those who stayed to help clean up after the dance, it is much appreciated.

On Saturday April 13th at 8-10:30 PM, join us for our next BCS dance at the Infant Jesus Church, on Allds Street. This will be a Plus Level dance with Frank Lescrinier calling and Pat Brann cueing. Margery Shank and Chris Howard will be hosting the dance. The theme is "April Showers". Raids/retrievals at this dance will be Heel & Toe SDC, Turkey Town trotters, and Concord Coach. Setup time will be at the usual 12:30 PM Saturday for anyone who is willing to help.

Our June dance finally has a theme. It will be "Salad Night". Get out your recipes from grandma or old family favorites, oriental salad, fruit salad, macaroni salad, egg salad, toss salad, Jell-O salad, Caesar salad, potato salad, three bean salad, tuna salad, … be creative. Don’t forget it will be casual dress and it may be hot by then. In this case shorts would certainly be appropriate.

Banner Chair Report Wayne & Priscilla Griffin

March 1st Friday Retrieval to Litchfield Swingers Fun Badge Class Dance - Chris Pinkham called for 6 squares of dancers. There were many fun activities for dancers to earn fun dangles. Majestic Badge brought many badges, dangles and other items. Dancers at this retrieval were Chris, Wayne & Priscilla, Kathi Butt, Bill & Viv, Steve Wurtzler, Jim Hawkins, Amy, Katherine, Paula, and Joe McClintock. Joe and Paula received a courtesy banner.

March 2nd Saturday Raid to Firesiders Class Dance - Jerry Maurice was worried that his voice would not last the evening but it did. He also called a contra type mixer that had two rings of dancers circling in opposite directions. Using Spin the Top, he had dancers in ocean waves and then had them circulate to the next oceanwave. Our 15 supporters were: Chris Howard, Wayne Griffin, Amy Bollenbach, Katherine Bollenbach, Preston Walsh, Hal Kelley, Kathi Butt, Lori Forrence, John & Valerie Lamb, Hank Perigny, Cecilia C. Kendig, Joe McClintock and Ray & Carol Kebbee. The Firesiders plan to retrieve their banner at our May dance.

March 9th Saturday BCS Class Dance - Four clubs came for banners and accounted for 51 of the 69 guests. Heel & Toe (14), Wolf Rockers (14), and Bradford Country Squares (12) raided our banners and the Cloudbusters (11) retrieved theirs. The raids we had planned to the Wolf Rockers (3/30) and the Bradford Country Squares (6/22) are now retrievals. Either the dry air or a missing power cord appeared to be the cause of a nose bleed for caller Matt Auger just before the dance. Both were quickly resolved and Matt called a fun dance. There were 10 squares dancing the first tip and 9 squares dancing the last tip.

March 15th Friday Retrieval to Single Squares Mainstream +2 Plus tips Dance - They raided our October dance with 15 dancers so when we only had 7 dancers at their November 16th dance, we decided we needed to attend another of their dances. Barbara Strong cued the rounds. Chris Pinkham called to 7 Plus squares and 7 Mainstream squares . Our 8 supporters were: Wayne & Priscilla, Tammy, Amy & Katherine, Joe McClintock, Joe Maheu, and Steve O'Neil.

March 16th Saturday Retrieval to Heel & Toe Dance, Mainstream with Fast Track and Plus tips - We had a great time dancing to the calling of Matt Auger and the cueing of Bernie Porter. We believe the other dancers had a terrific time too. Among the 14 squares (WOW!) were the following 19 BCS supporters: Chris, Debbie, Wayne & Priscilla, Cheryl Palucchi, Kathi, Roberta, Hal, Bill & Viv, Steve & Lorri, Bob Baker, Tammy, Jonas, Amy, Katherine, Margery, and Eric. Three squares stayed until 11 PM to dance the Fast Track tips and many were BCS members.

March 23rd Saturday Raid to Turkey Town Trotters Plus Dance - Dennis Marsh & Carol McGee called and cued to 14 squares of dancers. Wow! Another big dance. Three other clubs marched up for banners. Our 14 supporters were: Chris, Debbie, Penny & Skip, Wayne & Priscilla, Roberta, Hal, Eric, Amy, Katherine, Harli, Tammy, and Jonas. We also saw Tony A. and Della N. who are members of both clubs. We hope the Turkey Town Trotters have as much fun at our April dance when they plan to retrieve their banner.

March 30th Saturday Retrieval to Wolf Rockers Mainstream/Plus Dance - Jim Schell and Lila Heath We hope to see them at our April, May or June dance.

Upcoming Dances:

April 6th Saturday Raid to Concord Coach Dance - Canceled. We have their banner from our 12/15 raid.

April 7th Sunday Retrieval to Pepperell Squares Mainstream/Plus Dance - Dance is from 2 to 5 PM with early rounds starting at 1:30 PM. Their next dance after April 7th is on November 24, 2002. They only hold 2 dances each year.

April 13th Saturday BCS Plus Dance - The Turkey Town Trotters and the Concord Coach SDC plan to retrieve their banners. The Heel & Toe SDC is raiding our banner.

April 20th Saturday Retrieval to Heel & Toe Mainstream with Fast Track & Plus tips Dance - John Hendron & Bernie Porter are featured.

May 3rd Friday Raid to Litchfield Swingers 30th Anniversary (Mainstream/Plus) Dance - Johnny Wedge will be calling and Marilyn Rivenburg will be cueing. The dance is from 8 to 10:30 PM and at the Griffin Memorial High School in Litchfield. They are also offering a Dinner and Dance combination ticket for $12.50 pp. The dinner starts at 6:45 PM and tickets are limited. See their flyers for more details regarding the meal and how to get tickets.

May 4th Saturday Retrieval to Skirts 'N Flirts Dance - Canceled. They did not raid our November dance as planned. So they don’t have our banner.

After our May dance, there are only 6 more raids/retrievals. Our dances and raid/retrieval schedule is on the BCS web site at: http://bordercitysquares.ezfreehosting.com/dances_raids.html
