Special General Meeting July 30 8:30 PM
There will be a short (5-minute) Special General Meeting of the Club on Monday July 30th at 8:30 to vote whether or not to approve the board's nomination of Ed Renauld as our next Club caller. Ed took a break from teaching last winter and spring due to a very heavy work schedule. However, his schedule has changed, and he is again able to continue teaching square dance classes.

Summer Dancing

If you think there isn’t much summer dancing, think again. In addition to our Monday night Mainstream and Plus lessons, there are quite a few clubs, callers, and dance halls who sponsor summer dances. Go to the Club web site, click on the "Dances" tab, and scroll down to the section headed "Monthly Dance Schedules" for a list of many dances in the area. Our thanks to Wayne Griffin who has spent much time compiling these lists and maintaining our site.

Free Mainstream Demo Dance, Friday Aug 24, 7 - 9 PM SearsTown Mall, Leominster

This is a free demo dance open to all mainstream dancers. It is a great opportunity for all our new graduates and old timers to get to a dance before the regular Fall season starts. Whether you are a new dancer or a long-time enthusiast, demos like this are a great way to show the public the fun we have and to let the community know that Border City Squares is alive and well.

Class Graduation, Mon. Aug. 27th 7-10 PM

Although both our Mainstream and Plus classes are going well, many of us felt that there just wasn’t enough time to get our dancers ready for the fall dance season. We are therefore extending the classes into August with graduation planned for Monday, August 27th from 7:00 to 10:00 PM.

Please join us for a fun evening of dancing and graduation celebrations.

Fall Classes Start Monday Sept 10 (8-10 New Dancers, 7-8 All-Position MS Workshop)

Invite all your friends, family, relatives, co-workers, and neighbors to join us on Monday September 10 at 8 - 10 PM for our Introductory Square Dancing Fun Night. This "September Class" will learn Phase 1 square dance calls from September 10 into January. Also running during this same period, September 10 into January, at 7 - 8 PM, we will have an All-Position Mainstream Workshop.

From late January through May, the "September Class" will continue with Phase 2 at 8:30 - 10:00 PM. A second, and brand new, introductory Square Dance "January Class" will learn Phase 1 at 7:00 - 8:30 PM.

In May, the "September Class" will graduate. From May through August, at 7 - 9 PM, the "January Class" will continue with Phase 2 calls, and graduate In August. Also running during this same period, May through August, at 9 - 10 PM, we will have Plus lessons (Phase 3).

For everyone who can recite this full year schedule without notes, there will be a $ 3.00 discount on your next admission (not really).

Please start recruiting for the Fall class now. We will have fliers available at all Club functions. Please take a few to put them up at work, school, supermarket, library and anywhere else you can think of. Remember, the best way to get new members is by personal contact, so tell everyone you know about this wonderful activity.

Club dues are due. The official due date for our next year's membership is July 1st. If you have not yet renewed, please fill out the form on Page 5 and give or mail to the Club Treasurer as soon as possible. You will help your club provide a great year of dancing, and you will continue to receive the Club Newsletter.

Carousel Horse Raffle

Many thanks to Arthur Fitzgerald for donating another of his wonderful carousel horse planters for our spring raffle. The drawing was held at our June dance, and the winner was Donna Maurice. We sold 146 tickets and the raffle brought $123 into the Club treasury.

Raid/Retrieval Recognition

Club members who attended at least ten raids and/or retrievals during the 2000-2001 dance season may elect to receive a special fun dangle showing the number of dances attended. These dangles will be paid for by the club. If you have attended enough dances and would like to receive a dangle, please submit your name to either the Club Treasurer or the Club Secretary.

In addition to the dangles, Wayne and Priscilla Griffin have arranged for two free renewal subscriptions to the Northeast Square Dance Magazine to be given to two lucky banner raid supporters. Each dancer will be awarded a number of tickets equal to the number of raids or retrievals attended, and a drawing will be held later this summer for the subscriptions.

New Century Club Member Elizabeth Griffin

Elizabeth Griffin obtained her 100th caller signature and is now a proud member of the Century Club. She received her first autograph in September 1998, and took only two years and ten months to get signatures from 100 callers. The last ten were the hardest. Thanks to Erik Pluylaar from the Netherlands who was at Jim Mayo’s caller school and Jerry Helt from Cincinnati, Ohio who came to our June dance with Dave Hass, Elizabeth reached her goal. Congratulations, Elizabeth. For more information about the Century Club, see the rules in the Century Books that you can purchase from the Treasurers.

Caller School Participation

Jim Mayo, CallerLab Chariperson, and Everett Mackin, CO-OP Chairperson, and the other callers who attended Jim’s caller school in June send their thanks to the many dancers who helped make the school a success. Border City Squares members who danced at the classes included Amy and Katherine Bollenbach; Wayne, Priscilla, and Elizabeth Griffin; Joyce Peterson; Debbie Coit, and Tammy Dorris. In addition to these dancers, several other BCS members attended the free dances on Sunday and Wednesday evenings.

June 23 Demo for Channel 13 Managers

For many years TV Channel 13 in Nashua has aired free ads for our club This year we were asked by one of Channel 13’s marketing managers to provide a 1-hour demo for the 60th birthday party of her husband (also a Channel 13 employee). Thanks to Amy and Katherine Bollenbach, Wayne and Priscilla Griffin, Eric Magrath, Bill and Anne Parke, Margery Shank and Chris Howard for helping with this demo. For their efforts these dancers were treated to an excellent barbecue supper!

NSSARDA Reps Needed

We are still very much in need of two or more Border City Squares members to act as our representatives to the North Shore Square and Round Dance Association. In addition to providing the insurance plan covering many clubs in our area, NSSARDA helps coordinate dance activities of many of our sister clubs. Club representatives are needed to attend four meetings a year (the third Sunday of Sept, Nov, Mar, and May), and discuss and vote on the various issues that come before the Association. Please contact Bill Thompson or any of the BCS Board members for more information.

Club Chair Report

Saturday June 9, Our Border City Squares Dance. With almost 11 squares and 5 callers in the hall, our June "Ice Cream Social" dance has to have been one of the most lively mainstream dances of the year. In addition to our principal caller, Dave Hass, and cuer, Marilyn Rivenburg, we were delighted to have Jerry Helt from Cincinnati, Ohio, Erik Pluylaar (http://www.dutch-square.com) from the Netherlands, and local callers Patty Greene and Norm Poisson with us for the dance. Jerry was a special guest of the Connecticut Caller Association and drove up with Dave for the evening. Erik had been attending the caller lab here in Nashua and had attended quite a few dances in the area during the past 10 days.

During the dance Dave Hass called some of his amazing progressive squares along with his infamous "Drinking Wine" singing call. Both Jerry and Erik called guest tips adding even more variety to the evening. And not to be overlooked, Marilyn gave us another fine evening of rounds.

In addition to the retrieving clubs Turkey Town Trotters, Skirts ‘N Flirts, and Minuteman Squares, we also had visitors from the Pelican Squares, Single Squares, Winnipesaukee Squares, Queen City Promenaders, Baldwin Apple Squares, Londonderry Apple Squares, Tech Squares, Riverside Squares, Heel & Toe, Litchfield Swingers, Riverside Squares, and Lake Shore Farms. Anne and Jesse Reczko were our hosts and provided outstanding patriotic decorations. Thanks to Dave and Mary Raymond, Jack and Mary Dunn, and Wayne and Priscilla Griffin for helping with the set up and to all who helped with clean up after the dance.

Saturday September 8, Our Next Border City Dance. It will be a mainstream dance with two plus tips, and the caller and cuer will be Everett Mackin and Barbara Nutting.

Thanks, Have a Great Summer, and Welcome to Out New Club Chairpersons. Norma and I want to thank all those who faithfully helped host, decorate, clean up, and provide food for all our dances this year. While attendance was off a little compared to past years, Border City put on some fine dances, and we can take pride in continuing to be one of the most active clubs in the area. We also want to thank Penny and Skip Guild for rejoining the Board as next year’s Club Chairs after only a brief vacation from the Board. Have a great summer, and be sure to join us in September for another great year of dancing.

Class Chair Report

Sunday June 24 NSSARDA Class Dance. Several of the class & club went to a class level dance sponsored by NSSARDA. The class members attending were Anne-Marie Boucher, Jim McClarin, Cecelia Kendig and Rita Lamarche. Club members were Amy Bollenbach, Katherine Bollenbach, Chris Howard, Cheryl Palluchi, Margery Shank, and Viv & Bill Thompson. Everyone had a great time in spite of the hot and humid weather. At break time many were found out in the entry way trying to keep cool. Katherine and Jim found the best way to cool down was standing out in the rain. Attendance was very disappointing with only 3 squares in attendance. Border City was the only club that attended with class members.

Patty Greene did an excellent job of calling and keeping everyone motivated to dance in spite of the heat. She did a couple of tips with six couple squares. Everyone seemed to enjoy this new concept, even the present class. Pattie also did a little hot hash and sped up the pace a little. All in all everyone who attended had a great time.

Thanks, Have a Fun and Safe Summer, and Welcome to Our New Class Chairpersons. Well I think we finally can say summer is here. Hope everyone has a fun and safe summer. This will be the last chair report written by Bill and myself. We are currently in process of transitioning the class supplies and duties to your new Class Chairpersons Anne and Bill Parke. We will continue to assist them and join in celebrating with the class at graduation. Graduation will be on August 27 from 7:00 to 10:00 PM.

Bill & I hope that upon graduating you will return in September to Angel with the new class members. As the old adage goes "Practice Makes Perfect" . Bill & I wish you all the best and our advice to you is attend the class sponsored dances with the new September class.

Bill & I would like to thank everyone for their support and help with the past year especially those who contributed the many wonderful tasty morsels that we all enjoyed. You know who you are and we thank you.
